Blog for mental health in 2014

5 02 2014

m6We blog for various reasons. I do it because I love to write, and because I love to learn, share information and meet other people who want to fight for the same things as me. A subject I focus on all the time, is mental health. This comes natural to me, since I work as a psychologist, and I hope I`ll never stop with what feels meaningful and might help others. I blog for you, the reader, with hope that you`ll find something meaningful or inspiring in what I write.

This year, like last year, will be full of activities where writing will be a central part of what I`ll do. I need to express myself like others need air. :

I need to share what I know, and I need to help fight stigma against mental health. That`s why I`ll promise to write about mental health. I will share from my personal knowledge, experience and dreams, and will always fight for a better tomorrow.

Here follows my pledge“I pledge my commitment to the Blog for Mental Health 2014 Project. I will blog about mental health topics not only for myself, but for others. By displaying this badge, I show my pride, dedication, and acceptance for mental health. I use this to promote mental health education in the struggle to erase stigma.”  Relevant Reads:

It`s all in her head

3 02 2014

It’s AlI in Her Head is a dynamic collection of finely crafted, stigma-busting stories by a diverse group of women who have struggled with a range of mental challenges, from mild dysthymia to full-blown schizophrenia.

Mannen weten alles beter! Althans dat denken ze zelf. Maar waarom eigenlijk?
Pinned by Greg

The statistics are alarming: one in six American adults suffers from a diagnosable mental illness such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, ADHD, phobia, PTSD, eating disorders, or addiction. Half of all Americans struggle with some form of mental illness at some time in their lives. Many millions more face the challenges of less-clinical, still-problematic conditions, such as worry, pessimism, and self-criticism. Doubly alarming is the underreported fact that most of these people are women.

On an epidemiological level, women are 2-3 times more likely to suffer depression and anxiety than men; women are 3 times more likely to attempt suicide than men; women constitute 90% of people with eating disorders. Furthermore, studies show that women of color are over-represented in mental health statistics, and frequently receive sub-standard care.

Leaving aside the question of whether and/or how gender disparities in mental health are attributable to biological differences in the brains of women and men, certainly cultural factors are partly to blame. Women’s emotions and ideas are frequently invalidated; our status in the workplace is undervalued; we are socialized against prioritizing ourselves and our health; and we are expected to remain cheerful despite all these things. Culturally, we are encouraged to distance ourselves from, distrust, and discount our emotions and our thoughts, which can exacerbate mood disorders and other psychological difficulties.

Still, an enormous number of women have found ways to cope with their challenges and lead productive, creative, intellectually and emotionally satisfying lives. They’ve ferreted out helpful treatments, medications, practices, habits, and other mechanisms that enable them to make peace with their troubled minds.

How have they done it? How have you done it? It’s All in Her Head strives to provide readers with a glimpse into the successful strategies exercised by women whose persistent mental difficulties were met head on with something else in her head: resiliency, resourcefulness, intelligence, determination, and strength. Essays also include the powerful part played by supportive partners, health care providers, peers, family and friends.

Please consider adding your voice to this collection. There are far too many women who are in need of help. The involvement of talented writers will catapult this project into a realm that will have the most reach and influence, to those who need its wisdom most

Army of me

2 02 2014

I have written some posts on dissociation, and even if people might feel this song has nothing to do with it, it still highlights one fact about dissociation: Dissociation means that we have different parts with their own unique abilities, weaknesses and strengths. Aguilera sings about the strong ones, and together they make an army. You have the wise, strong and the fighter. The point is also that when you are one of them, the others are in the background. A “fighter” would be in that mode, ready for attack with all that means in form of thoughts, feelings and actions. When you go from one mode to another, you “switch”. We all do it, so it`s not as otherworldly as the word dissociation suggests.

Enjoy the song, your time and yourself.
wise

Lyrics to the song. Notice the “parts” she sings about in the chorus.

I’ve been standing where you left me
Praying that you’d come and get me
But now I’ve found my second wind
Now I found my second skin
Well I know what you were thinking
You thought you’d watch me fade away
When you broke me into pieces
But I gave each piece a name

{Chorus}
One of me is wiser
One of me is stronger
One of me is a fighter
And there’s a thousand faces of me
And we’re gonna rise up
For every time you broke me
Well you’re gonna face an army
Army of me

{Christina Aguilera}
Welcome to my revolution
All your walls are breaking down
It’s time you had a taste of losing
Time the table’s turned around

I see a glimpse of recognition
But it’s too late, yes it’s too late
And what you though was your best decision
Just became your worst mistake

{Chorus}

So how does it feel
To know that I beat you?
That I can defeat you ?
Oh. how does it feel ?

It sure feels sweeter to me

Army of me

Most of the time, we use only one end or the other of a contrast at a time.  These ends are called characteristics or, especially in reference to the characteristics of people,  traits.   But at the other end there will always be a contrast.

Float2

Things float without a systemlways there, lurking in the background.  You can’t have one without the other — good without bad, up without down. Please note that these contrast need not be verbal:  My cat knows the difference between the expensive cat food and the cheap stuff, yet can’t tell you about it;  an infant contrasts between mommy and non-mommy; wild animals contrast safe areas and dangerous ones, etc.  Even adult humans sometimes “just know” without being about to say — unconscious contrasts, if you like:  what is it about that person that you like or dislike?

Flower

Pieces coming together

Contrasts don’t just float around independently, either.  We interrelate and organize them.  For example, we can  define  a category:  “Women are adult female human beings.”  Or we can go a step further and organize things into  taxonomies,  those tree-like structures we come across in biology:  A Siamese is a kind of cat, which is a kind of carnivore, which is a kind of mammal, which is a kind of vertebrate..
..
Or we can put contrasts into more temporal structures, like  rules.   These are often called schemas or scripts.  You can find explicit examples in books about card games, etiquette, or grammar; but you know quite a few rule systems yourself, even if they have become so automatic as to be unconscious!
Not all organization of contrasts are so tightly structured.  We can  describe  something:  “Women are delicate.”  As the example is intended to suggest, descriptions, as opposed to definitions, need not be true!   Beliefs  are similar to, but looser than, taxonomies.  Whereas birds definitely (i.e. by definition) are vertebrates and have feathers, it is only my belief that they all fly — I could be wrong!  Stereotypes are examples of beliefs; so are opinions.  But some beliefs are so strongly held that we see them as definite.
There are also  narratives — the stories we have in our minds.  These are temporal, like rules, but are amazingly flexible.  They can be a matter of remembered personal experiences, or memorized history lessons, or pure fiction.  I have a suspicion that these contribute greatly to our sense of identity, and that animals don’t have them to the degree we do.

The sound of happy beginnings

1 01 2014

Walking the streets of Copenhagen

Right now I am in the capital of Denmark. I am sitting in the fancy “Bella sky”, a creative masterpiece. It`s new years eve, and I`m in a reflective moof. People have all kinds of memories, expriences and dreams for the future. I hope that everyone will follow the dreams they have, while also letting get of the past we don`t need anymore.

A fresh start is always good, and I believe strongly in it. Every one of us have the ability to change so much, both in ourselves and in other´s lives. Let us focus on the power within each and every one of us, and let us become strong enough to help those less fortunate then us. With wars, hunger and conflicts all around us, we need every helping hand there is. Be kind to each other, and choose happiness, not fear. We only have one life (that we know of), so make sure you live this life exactly as YOU want.

Happy new year
